About the University

Established in 1899, Odessa National Medical University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the large city of Odessa (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Odessa Oblast. Officially accredited/recognized by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Odessa National Medical University (ONMedU) is a small (enrollment range: 3,000-3,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Odessa National Medical University (ONMedU) offers courses and programs leading to officialy recognized higher education degrees such as undergraduate certificates/diplomas, associate degrees, bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 116 years old HE institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 70-80% making this Ukrainian higher education organization a somewhat selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. ONMedU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, financial aids and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, as well as administrative services.

1 September 1900. old style life of Odessa held a significant event that left its mark in the history of medical education in Ukraine and for many years has defined its future - opened the medical faculty of Novorossiysk University.

Faculty had bright prospects, because nmu the outstanding, world-renowned scientists. Before the opening of the faculty was completed major buildings and clinics, which are constructed with the latest construction and architecture. Admittedly, this was the most prestigious faculty and nayosnaschenishym medical schools of that time.

However, this good start was suspended war with Japan, the revolutionary events of 1905-1907, GG, First World War 1914-1918, GG, 1917 October Revolution., And civil war. Had elapse time to after the destruction of the old system of high school began on a new footing performed its slow recovery. 1922. Medical Faculty of Novorossiysk University was reformed into an independent university - Medical Institute, which again turned into a leading university of the south.

In the 20 years of the last century formed and actively developing basic schools of thought, which brought the Odessa medical institute worldwide fame. This - Odessa therapeutic school based students S.P.Botkina - professors S.V.Levashovym P.O.Valterom and their successors were L.P.Dmytrenko, MD Strazhesko, F.H Yanovsky, M.O .Yasynovskyy. At this time fruitfully developing Ophthalmic Odessa school, one of the founders was Professor S.S.Holovin. Further its formation and global roll associated with the name of Academician V.P.Filatova.

In pre-revolutionary times emerging world-famous school of pathologists, whose founder was the first Dean of the Medical Faculty VV Pidvysotskyy. His closest aides and students were OO Bogomolets and Zabolotny, who later headed the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. At the same time formed a large scientific school scholar - V.V.Voronina pathologist. At his ideas formed V.P.Filatov future prominent scientists, L.P.Dmytrenko, SI Vinokurov, L.O.Cherkes, M.O.Yasynovskyy, V.K.Zhhenti and others. Not to mention the famous cohort morphologists - M.K.Lysonkova professors, M.S.Kondrat'yeva, F.A.Volynskoho, V.I.Bushkovycha and others. Their original works have been recognized worldwide.

During the years of independent Ukraine our university become one of the leading medical universities IV level of accreditation. He is a member of International and European University Association. This level of teaching students and training closer to international standards. Today, the six faculties and 58 departments of the university about 6,000 students and students, 1300 of them - the citizens of 52 foreign countries. Navchannnya foreign students in Russian, Ukrainian and English. Postgraduate education are 250 graduate students, interns, masters and klinordynatoriv.

The teaching staff consists of 106 doctors - professors and 410 candidates - professors. Among them, 20 Academician state and branch academies, 42 member of foreign academies, 39 honored workers of science and technology, distinguished doctors and workers of public education, 10 winners of state and other prestigious international awards.

The University has a modern material and technical basis for the educational, scientific and medical diagnostic work. It promotes the learning process and medical practice of the latest achievements of medical science, including endoscopic, laparoscopic, Transplant technology, tissue therapy, genetic medicine and others.

In recent years established a unique scientific and medical units of the university: its own dental clinic and multidisciplinary university, research institute of molecular genetics and cellular medicine, Clinical Research Institute of Biophysics. Successfully operated jointly established with the Health Diagnostic Center: cardiorheumatology, Eye Microsurgery, osteosynthesis, endoscopic and laser surgery, pediatric cardiology, toxicology and others.

Creating a modern university publishing, printing complex issue allowed four scientific journals licensed HAC of Ukraine, books and manuals, authored by university scientists. Training literature series "Library student - physician" is published in Ukrainian, Russian and English. Over the years the publishing world saw 170 titles of textbooks a circulation of 205,000 copies.

In December 2008. New readers will receive its first students of the University Library, which will have tickets for students junior and senior courses, reading room with 140 seats, computer room, electronic library.

Computer park in the university has 480 computers, 300 of them are connected to the Internet.

Educational work is a priority at the university. It is carried out by curricula adapted to the Bologna system. It provides a balanced fundamental, humanitarian and special training of specialists at the junction of various branches of medical nauky.V learning process implemented testing credit-modular system, remote learning method, system independent expert assessment of student learning.

The university has 12 academic buildings with total area of 27,700 square meters, 608 classrooms, offices and laboratories. In six dormitories lives about 3 thousand students. University library book fund is 800 thousand books.

Over the 108 years of the Odessa State Medical University ONMedU trained 74,000 doctors, 590 doctors and about 4 thousand candidates. Among them, 9,000 physicians and more than 100 candidates are citizens of foreign countries.

International faculty

In 1946 the first foreign student - citizen of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Kim Jang Soo has been admitted to Odessa Medical Institute (previous name of ONMedU).

In general, in the history of education of foreign people in the Odessa State Medical University has three stages.

The first - from 1946 till 1961. - Training of doctors for the people's democracy.

The second - from 1961 till 1991. - Training of medical personnel mainly to Asia, Africa and Latin America, and the third - since 1991 till now. This period of training on contract basis all interested foreigners, including citizens of the CIS.

At the first stage of training was carried out on the basis of intergovernmental agreements, on the second - on the basis of intergovernmental, inter-party coordination and communication between NGOs and trade unions, the third stage is associated with the collapse of the USSR and the CIS inability to perform the former arrangement.

At the initial stage, not numerous students from European countries hardly changed the organizational structure of the educational process. Foreign students entered into existing groups and studied together with Soviet students.

The emergence of students from Asia, Africa and Latin America resulted in significant changes in the education of foreign students, so in 1964 has been created the dean dedicated to work with foreign students and later the Department of Russian Language (1969).

In 1979 the position of vise-rector for international relations has been introduced.

In 1990 the faculty is preparing graduates - foreign nationals in the internship, masters, postgraduate, doctoral studies. This year started training courses for foreign citizens.

In 1992 the preparatory department for foreign citizens, where students are trained in Russian and Ukrainian language, improve basic training in physics, chemistry and biology ha been created.

After passing the final exams students receive state certificate and can be credited to the first course chosen specialty Odessa National medical university or other institution of higher education in Ukraine.

Since 1996 the university opened training of doctors English and later French study.

Foreign students acquire knowledge and skills of the newest medical technologies: endoscopic, laparoscopic, maxillofacial, plastic surgery, transplantation, tissue therapy, implant dentistry and others.

The priority task of the university at the present stage is to expand direct contacts with foreign countries based on mutual agreements, which is aimed at further integration into European and global health structures to learn best practices in medical education and scientific research development.

Since 1946 the faculty received training over 7,000 foreign citizens from 58 countries worldwide. Many graduates have become leading specialists, heads of medical institutions, regional services, educational institutions.

At present time at the university more than 1000 foreign students have the opportunity to use high-quality and modern information services, new student library, study books that are written by professors of the University and published in ONMedU. Continuing the tradition of educational work with foreign students in ONMedU operates a comprehensive approach to learning and international education fully developed personality, which aims to create a friendly atmosphere, good conditions for learning and a comprehensive and mutually enriching review of our countries, their history and culture. Medical degree were more than 7 thousand people.

The current educational work with foreign students has been repeatedly identified Diplomas Office for Youth Policy, Office of European Integration of Odessa City Council, diplomas Department on Nationalities and Religions of the Odessa Regional State Administration, as well as representatives of diplomatic corps in different countries.
